Our Temporary Home: Trying To Fit In
In the movie, The Martian Child, David adopts Dennis, a troubled child. Dennis had a unique disconnection to this world, and children his age; he became convinced that he was from Mars. Dennis didn’t behave like other children; he didn’t dress like them or enjoy similar things. He didn’t even have predictable emotions, making it even harder for his father to understand him. But despite Dennis’ quirkiness and struggles, David’s love outweighed it; he loved Dennis simply because Dennis was his son. David gave Dennis all the space and time he needed to heal, come to trust him, gain his own understanding of the security that he was offered, and fit in.
Trying To Fit In
Have you ever felt like Dennis? Have you ever tried and tried to fit in, but with no success? Have you ever given up? Have you ever felt so out of touch with this world, that it seemed easier to start from scratch on another planet? Have you ever felt desperate for someone to understand you? Have you ever felt rejected by someone who wouldn’t even try, or perhaps just wanted to ‘fix’ you, as Dennis had experienced early on in life? I know that I saw myself in the character of Dennis, I was different, and often didn’t fit in. I even felt like Dennis – I didn’t it in with girls my age; I didn’t think, act, or even dress like them, and that almost always made it difficult to make friends. God is like the character of David in the story: He’s waited centuries to be able to adopt us into His family, and He loves us unconditionally.
God’s Love For Us
Nothing will ever change the love God has for you, and He knows everything about you: accomplishments, mistakes, times when you’ve failed in huge ways, times when you’ve accepted life even with its difficulties, and stood strong. Thankfully, we don’t need to fit in in here, on earth. As followers of Christ, we are called to be different than most. This world’s standards are what many aspire to, but they are a far cry from how God calls us to live our lives, and what He wants for us. His desire has always been to save us from sin and death.
Our Temporary Home
Earth is only our temporary home. One day, Christ will come for us. It’s not that we’re from another planet, but with Christ working in us we’re not of this world, and don’t need to be ashamed that we are different. This world is not our home. Let your light shine for Him, and may others witness His grace through your life.
